  A bacterial infection is defined as a proliferation of a harmful strain of bacteria inside the body. Bacterial infection may include pneumonia, meningitis, food poisoning etc. Bacteria may be classified as gram-positive or gram-negative. The cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria is very thick made up of peptidoglycan layer but, in comparison, the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria is very thin. To fight the bacterial infections doctors usually prescribe certain antibiotics. These antibiotics work by disrupting the processes necessary for bacterial cell growth and proliferation. Antibiotics are not designed for treating viral infections, but still they are sometimes prescribed during viral illnesses in order to protect the patient from the possible secondary bacterial infection.
